Avoidable Loss of Sight

Don Moores

A Close Call

Don, 92, who lives in Halifax, completely lost the vision in his right eye years ago; so when his remaining eye suffered sudden vision loss, some of the latest technology helped identify the problem and allowed the doctors to chose the best treatment.

Now he will not go blind in his only good eye. With a Spectralis, his original vision loss could have been diagnosed and had early treatment.

Campaigning to Fill a Critical Need

"Believing is Seeing" is a collaborative fundraising project of the Masonic Foundation of Nova Scotia and the Queen Elizabeth II Foundation who recognize the need for specialized diagnosis of eye disease.

The Spectralis OCT is the most advanced diagnostic tool currently available to meet the requirements of the QEII Eye Care Center. With the support of the Masonic Foundation, Corporate Partners, and the public at large we aim to make the purchase of the Spectralis OCT a reality.

The Queen Elizabeth II Eye Care Center

In 2009, there were a total of 58,763 patient visits to the Eye Care Center of which 42% (24,601) concerned retinal diagnoses, 44,297 were walk-in visits, 6,421 involved ophthalmic surgeries. The QEII Eye Care Center was originally designed to serve 26.000 per year. With referrals from all four Atlantic provinces between 30 and 50 patients go through the imaging lab every day.

The number and the nature of the eye conditions presented on any given day demand the efficient and an effective diagnostic process that can be provided by the Spectralis.

A Case in Point

When the vision in Murray K's second eye became poor he was seen urgently - wet macular degeneration was identified. The Spectralis can accurately identify Murray's current status and the requirements for his ongoing treatment.

The Bottom Line

The most demanding retinal cases deserve the best in comprehensive diagnostic assessment. The Spectralis provides doctors with a comprehensive assessment in the diagnosis of retinal disease, on-going monitoring of your treatment, and therapy.

All patients of all ages, big and small, can benefit from the rapid, painless, highly sensitive and accurate imaging of the Spectralis. The Spectralis will radically enhance the diagnostic process at the Queen Elizabeth II Eye Care Center.
